Chapter Ten

Leaving Kit standing with Nathan at the side door of the Dinner Belle Diner Sunday night was no easy task for Simon. He’d had thoughts to share with her, ideas to pursue. But she had so obviously wanted him gone that he knew it would be best if he went along with her wishes.

What he’d wanted to suggest to her had the potential to be of great consequence, not only to both of them, but to Nathan, as well. He hadn’t wanted to risk having her dismiss the possibility he intended to present simply because she was annoyed with him. He wanted her to be in a receptive mood when he gave voice to his thoughts, although even then there was a good chance she’d think he was crazy. In fact, he had thought he was crazy when the unlikely scheme first came to him.

Seeing Kit crying quietly as she looked out at his parents, walking with Nathan on the back lawn, Simon had known at once the reason for her tears. He had also known that he was responsible. In the past six months she’d lost her mother and her best friend, and soon he would be taking custody of the little boy she so obviously loved.

Simon had hated being the one to cause Kit such anguish, but as he’d put his arms around her and tried to comfort her, he hadn’t seen that he had any other choice. He was Nathan’s father. Not only did he have a legal right to his child, but also a moral duty.

Beyond that, his son had claimed a huge piece of his heart. His love for Nathan had come swiftly, easily, over the space of a few days, but Simon knew it was also deep and abiding. No matter what challenges lay ahead, Simon had vowed that he would always be there for his precious little boy.

Holding Kit close in his arms, Simon had acknowledged that there was no way the two of them could be a part of Nathan’s daily life—24/7—unless, of course, they married.

He had been momentarily stunned by the audacity of such a thought. He liked Kit and there was an undeniable attraction brewing between them, but he wasn’t in love with her. And most of the time, she didn’t even seem to like him.

Yet when she’d looked at him, the almost palpable pain he’s seen in her teary eyes had seared him with the force of an arrow shot straight through his heart. He hadn’t been able to stop himself from kissing her then. The urge to soothe her had been too great for him to resist.

But another urge, an urge prompted by physical desire, man for woman, possessive as well as protective, had grabbed a hold of him in the instant after he’d put his mouth on hers. And Kit had responded in a way that had astonished him, at first, then seemed not quite so surprising, after all.

They had always known each other, albeit at a distance, growing up as they had in Belle.
